Amazing Melanated Mommies: 5
Updated: Apr 18, 2019
While African American history is too extraordinary to be summed up in a year, let alone a month, we will be celebrating phenomenal women who changed the world as we see it now all while raising children. If they can do it, so can we. Lets do it!!!
Melissa Harville-Lebron is the first African American woman to be a sole owner of a NASCAR team. Harville-Lebron started her career in the entertainment industry as an intern at Sony Music. She eventually managed to launch her own record label while also working for New York City’s Department of correction office. It wasn’t until her two son’s expressed an interest in driving for NASCAR (an idea introduced to them by one of Melissa’s artist) that she sought interest in the sport. In attempts to deter her sons from the idea, Harville-Lebron took them to a NASCAR experience that she was invited to. They fell in love with driving and she fell in love with the passion they had for the sport. In attempts to provide more opportunities for minorities she created E2 Northeast Motorsports under the umbrella of her previous business, W.M. Stone Enterprises, Inc. This became the first multicultural team to race competitively in NASCAR, with four black and Latino drivers. Two of these drivers are Harville-Lebron’s sons Eric and Enico. Not only is she extraordinary because of her feats as a business woman, but also as a mother. Along with her 3 biological children, Harville-Lebron is also raising 4 of her siblings’ children of which two have special needs. Salute Melissa Harville-Lebron!
