Amazing Melanated Mommies: 25
Updated: Apr 18, 2019
While African American history is too extraordinary to be summed up in a year, let alone a month, we will be celebrating phenomenal women who changed the world as we see it now all while raising children. If they can do it, so can we. Lets do it!!!
Lauryn Noelle Hill is a singer, songwriter and rapper, known for being a member of Fugees and for her solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which won many awards and broke several sales records. She was also recognized for becoming the first woman to be nominated in ten categories in a single year and the first woman to win five times in one night at the 1999 Grammys. Growing up in East Orange, New Jersey, Hill met Prakazrel "Pras" Michel while in high school and joined a group that he was starting. Together, with new member Wycleff Jean, they eventually became The Fugees. While she attained much success with The Fugees, it was her debut solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, that catapulted Lauryn’s career and made history. Around the same time Hill birthed two children while at the pentacle of her career. Being under so much pressure and struggling to be confident in her truth while pleasing the industry eventually took a toll on her, leading to a hiatus from the music scene. Hill continued to gain skeptics as she performed a very personal album titled “Unpugged” in which she openly challenged the “powers that be” and constraints put on society. Lauryn Hill is not just groundbreaking in her art, but in her integrity as her story encourages others to be leaders of themselves. She is now a mother of 6. Salute Ms. Lauryn Hill!
