Updated: Apr 18, 2019
While African American history is too extraordinary to be summed up in a year, let alone a month, we will be celebrating phenomenal women who changed the world as we see it now all while raising children. If they can do it, so can we. Lets do it!!!
Nikki Giovanni, born Yolanda Cornelia Giovanni Jr., is a poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator from Knoxville TN. One of the world's most well-known African-American poets, her work includes poetry anthologies, poetry recordings and nonfiction essays, and covers topics ranging from race and social issues to children's literature. Giovanni made her presence know during the Black Arts Movement, inspired by the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement. Her early work provides a strong, militant African-American perspective, leading one writer to dub her the "Poet of the Black Revolution". Not only did Giovanna earn a slew of awards and recognition from her literature, but she also made an impact in the world of television and education. A year after giving birth to her only son, Nikki hosted a TV show titled Soul! that highlighted and promoted black art and culture and allowed political expression. Giovanni has gone on to teach at institutions such as Queens College, Rutgers, and Ohio State, and is currently professor at Virginia Tech. Salute Ms. Nikki Giovanni!
