While African American history is too extraordinary to be summed up in a year, let alone a month, we will be celebrating phenomenal women who changed the world as we see it now all while raising children. If they can do it, so can we. Lets do it!!!
Tina Turner is an African American singer and songwriter who has been deemed the The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll and has sold more than 200 million records worldwide. Born Anna Mae Bullock, in Nutbush Tennessee, Turner started performing with a band that went by The Kings of Rhythm in St. Louis MO. Over time Turner developed a romantic relationship with the band’s lead singer Ike Turner. With his song writing capabilities and her electric, high energy performance style, the duo quickly rose to the top. With a rise in fame and popularity also came with more rigorous touring and stress on the couple that led to toxic rounds of domestic violence and drug abuse. When Ike and Tine Turner divorced, Tina left the relationship with four sons, two of her biological sons (one with Ike) and two sons from Ike’s previous relationship who she adopted. Despite many setbacks, Turner went on to perform mostly abroad and on Las Vegas circuits. After a number of albums, tours and movie/show features Tina Turner has racked up a total of 12 Grammy Awards, including eight competitive awards, three Grammy Hall of Fame awards, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
